Following two years of performing and collaborating with various traditional, classical and electronica artists, and touring her previous critically acclaimed album Foxglove and Fuschia – from which the song “Bean Dubh a Ghleanna” won best traditional track at the RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards 2018, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh has returned with what she describes as a ‘capsule project’. A mini album of 6 tracks – each of them with reference to the sea or a sea-theme.
“I’m obsessed with the ocean and our cultural connection to it. The name Muireann actually means Sea Maiden, there are three mermaids on the Mac Amhlaoibh coat of arms, and I’ve grown up on islands and the west coast of Kerry and get in the sea every chance I get. I’ve really enjoyed bringing my two passions together for this project.”
The supporting cast is a veritable who’s who of traditional music amongst them; Gerry O’Beirne & Dónal O’Connor who will tour the album with Muireann, Niamh Varian-Barry, Julie Fowlis, Donogh Hennessy, Séamus Begley and Muireann’s husband Billy Mag Fhloinn who features on the Yaybahar, a newly designed instrument built by Billy himself.
